The Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship, Department of Political Science and Public Administration’s work on civil society and citizenship grounded in two themes: ‘knowledge-building’ and ‘empowerment.’ The Institute aims in all its future work to build bridges between academia and grounded evidence-based knowledge-building research on the one hand, and on the other, civil society activists and their realities and needs on the ground.
To examine the potential and complex challenges surrounding citizenship in the Arab region as well as the role and importance of the state and policymakers in promoting citizenship and citizenship education, The Asfari Institute and the Mohammad Atallah Chair for Ethics at the American University of Beirut, in collaboration with The Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center, is organizing the Re-Imagining Citizenship Inaugural Annual Conference: Citizenship, Nation Building, and Inclusion in a Context of Endemic Crisis on May 6, 2023 and May 7, 2023 at Conference Hall 113, Residence 37, AUB, and online with Fadlo Khuri, Marwan Muasher, Lina Abou-Habib, Ohannes Geukjian, Maha Yahya, Saouma Bou Jaoude, Nuhad Doumit, Rabih Shibli, Karam Nachar, Maya Mikdashi, Laila El Baradei, Jibril Ali, Amaney A. Jamal, Sari Hanafi, Amr Abdelrahman, Hossam Bahgat, Tania Haddad.
This conference will provide a forum for researchers, scholars, civil society organizations and activists, and graduate students to present innovative ideas and research as well as discuss creative ideas and best practices to improve civic engagement in the area. It aims to foster a deeper understanding of the pertinent issues while identifying workable solutions and policy recommendations that can promote citizenship and strengthen social cohesion in the larger Arab region.
The discussion will be in English and moderated by Simon Kachar, Fouad Fouad, Maha Yahya, and Bashar Haydar.
