Despite embracing democracy, radical-right parties pose a significant challenge to the EU’s fundamental values. European leaders and institutions must address this challenge to safeguard democracy in the EU and ensure a more effective foreign policy.

Viktor Orbán began his second term as prime minister of Hungary in 2010. Since then, his governments and their promoted reforms have subverted the country’s liberal institutions and highlighted the fragility of democracy.

After Viktor Orbán’s landslide victory, the illiberal Hungary experiment will continue. Brussels must respond decisively to the erosion of democracy and media freedom.
