The Middle East suffers from a unique deficit in its peace and security architecture. “Order from Ashes: New Foundations for Security in the Middle East” is a multi-year TCF project that studies the possibilities for creating security architecture and institutions to facilitate cooperation and manage conflict.

Authoritarian states have largely survived the frontal challenges to their power since the Arab revolts in 2010. But alternative political ideas and power structures continue to emerge in marginal spaces or in geographical areas where the state’s authority weakens.

Five years into the civil war in Syria, the effects have been felt globally and few paths toward peace appear viable.

As the anniversary of Egypt’s January 25th revolution approaches, the direction of the country remains uncertain.
